Museletter - July 2005

My News

I’ve received the first proof back from my publishers, and production is on target for having the book on sale at the end of August. It was interesting to re-read it after a break, because I had spent much of the time since I sent it off to the publisher having ‘Gremlin’ attacks, thinking it wasn’t good enough. But reading it again has silenced that inner critic, because what the book is designed to do is to inspire and motivate the reader into action that produces results – and I found my feelings turning positive, and I’m producing results. So if it works for me, I’m fairly sure it will work for others.

Obviously I’ll keep you up to date on availability!

I am now looking for speaking opportunities in the Autumn. If you know of a Chamber of Commerce, or a business group that would like to be motivated to discover ‘The Easiest Way to Double Your Profits’ please get in touch.

My Muse

Fantastic news about London getting the Olympics in 2012, and it’s been a great summer of sport already, and the Test series against the Aussies hasn’t even started. I love sport.

I was wondering why I love it so much and it occurred to me that it’s an ‘acceptable’ form of winning. In our society, winning, producing success, and celebrating in a way that’s OK in a sporting environment isn’t acceptable elsewhere. We tend to think it’s showing off to celebrate our successes. Last week Lorraine and I attended a ‘Leavers Lunch’ with Rob at his school. After an excellent speech by the Headmaster, there were awards for the various subjects. Rob had won an award last year and had been tipped off by his teacher but he hadn’t heard this year, while his friend Michael had, so we weren’t expecting anything. They were reading through the list of winners, Michael picked up the RS prize, and the teacher was going through the others, and my mind drifted. Then I heard “Robert Simmonds” and I was pulled back into the present! We never call Rob Robert, and it took me a moment to register – That’s my boy! I was happily listening to the other names when, they announced the prize for PE, and Rob won that as well.

But there were no cheers, no hugs or high fives. It was all very restrained. It seems a shame really. It was a fantastic result for Rob, but the environment dictated the level of response.

Last week saw two occurrences in London where our response was beyond what is acceptable normally. Firstly 12,000 people crammed in Trafalgar Square to watch an announcement on TV! That is a huge number, probably five times more than the crowd in Paris, which just goes to show the depth of feeling that sport has in this country. And the following day in which some misguided people thought it would do some good to blow up a bus and some tube trains, Londoners showed their caring side. Helping each other out where they could and refusing to have their life dictated to by others. A friend of mine walked many miles to her car, then drove back into central London to offer lifts to strangers. People are fantastic, but often we allow Îthe acceptable responseâ to be our response. But when we go beyond that, we inspire others and allow ourselves to be truly alive.

That surely is why we are here – to be alive. How you accomplish that is up to you, but it is a heroic endeavor, and I wish you well in yours.

Book Recommendation

It's not about the bike - Book RecommendationIt's Not About The Bike by Lance Armstrong

The Tour de France is on this month with the amazing Lance Armstrong going for his seventh straight win. This race is unbelievably difficult and Armstrong won his first after recovering from virulent testicular cancer. His story, told here from his childhood to his first Tour victory is pure inspiration. See how far determination can take you! A real life hero can give you huge motivation.

Opportunity to Contribute

Apologies to those of you who got in touch with the Anthony Nolan fund to volunteer only to discover that they won’t take new donors over 40 years old! I didn’t know and certainly didn’t want those of you who did volunteer and come into that age bracket to feel past it! So if you’re a youngster of under 40 and you didn’t register last month, maybe you would like to do it on behalf of us old people!  www.anthonynolan.org.uk
