Museletter  - May 2006

My Muse

I was at a party on Saturday night and chatting to someone, as you do. And he was mentioning (complaining!) about the various pulls on his time.

Firstly there was running his business, then his family and also his charity work, which he finds fulfilling. But there just doesn't seem enough time to do it all, and keep everyone satisfied.

I went for a walk yesterday and thought about this situation which I feel is highly prevalent in our society and here are my thoughts:

Firstly, understand your priorities. For each of us it's different, and you need to decide your priorities for yourself.

Secondly, if you have young children, don't deprive yourself or them of time together. Time flies past and before you know it, they're driving, at University, busy with their friends, and don't need you so much. Invest your time in your children, and then when they are old enough to choose where to spend their time, you may be pleasantly surprised that they choose to spend it with you!

Thirdly, enroll the people in your life into the other areas of your life. So to take the earlier example of the three areas being business, family and charity work, enroll your spouse into your business success and your charity work. Enroll your business partners/colleagues into the importance of family and charity work, and enroll your colleagues in your charity world in your business success and family well-being.

When you have these people supporting your other areas, rather than feeling that you are taking from them, it creates harmony and a mutually supportive environment, allowing you to be more effective in all areas.

Getting the balance right is crucial, and it's different from each individual's perspective. If you enable that person's perspective to see how important the other demands on your time are, you will feel so much better as you have greater success in your endeavours.
