My Muse
The
phrase
that
keeps
coming
up
for
me
over
the
last
week
or
two
is:
‘There
is
no
meaning
other
than
the
meaning
we
assign
to
it’.
I’ve
tried
a
little
bit
of
research
but
cannot
find
it’s
origins,
though
it
appears
in
many
philosophical
books.
My
main
interest
is
not
in
‘The
meaning
of
Life’
and
indeed
if
there
is
one,
I’m
more
interested
in
the
meanings
that
we
assign
to
normal,
everyday
events.
I
think
that
human
beings
have
an
in-built
need
to
understand
ourselves,
our
world,
and
our
place
in
it.
The
only
way
we
can
do
that
is
when
we
have
an
experience,
we
compare
it
to
some
previous
experience
or
experiences
and
then
create
an
understanding
relative
to
our
past
experiences.
To
take
an
example
of
this,
if
you
go
on a
date
and
at
the
end
of
the
evening
your
date
says
“I’ll
call
you”
you
will
look
at
this
as
either
a
potential
brush
off,
or a
positive
sign
that
you’ll
be
seeing
them
again.
One
statement,
two
possible
meanings.
Who
knows
which
is
true?
Helen
Fielding’s
Bridget
Jones
is a
brilliant
caricature
of
how
this
works
in
real
life.
The
fact
is
neither
meaning
is
true
at
this
moment.
One
may
become
true
in
the
future,
but
we
create
the
meaning
because
we
want
to
understand.
The
meaning
doesn’t
give
us
understanding,
but
it
does
give
an
illusion
of
understanding.
We
kid
ourselves
with
it,
and
then
invest
in
that
understanding
by
giving
it
importance.
We
may
even
choose
to
make
the
understanding
‘certainty’.
Now
this
illusion
is
in a
position
of
power,
and
it
can
be
power
over
us.
I
believe
that
we
all
have
hundreds
of
these
beliefs,
these
meanings,
our
understandings.
And
many
of
them
limit
us
because
they
relate
to
our
past.
The
past
does
not
equal
the
future.
Unless
we
say
it
does,
or
we
allow
it
to
influence
us
so
much
that
we
recreate
circumstances.
In
each
moment
we
are
free
to
create
whatever
we
want,
whatever
is
possible,
as
long
as
we
are
free
of
our
negative
thoughts.
This
month,
create
something
special,
just
because
you
can
when
you
thought
you
couldn’t.
And
then
email
me
to
tell
me
what
you’ve
done!
