I've decided to move ahead in my speaking career. Rather than being a coach who does occasional speaking engagements, I am committed to being both a motivational speaker and a coach. In the first instance this means that I am looking for opportunities to deliver my talk "Can we create Happiness?" So if you know anyone who is a member of an association who books speakers, or indeed you are one yourself, please get in contact. It's A level results day and Rob has just done brilliantly. A clear victory of nurture over nature!
My Muse
I sent out an email a few weeks ago asking for support. Before I hit the send key I hesitated, wondering whether it was the right thing to do. My Gremlin had a field day: "What will people think?" "They'll think that you're doing badly" "Why should anyone help you?" "They'll think you're desperate" were just some of the gremlin thoughts I had.
However, I have a firm belief that people like to help others but often don't know that it's wanted.
As you know I did send out the email, against the wishes of my Gremlin! So what was the result? Well some people may have thought some of the above thoughts, but they sure didn't share them with me! I had many general replies of good wishes, which was very nice, and about half a dozen responses from people who had a specific enquiry. Some of these have already led to business being done, and I have some very interesting possible speaking opportunities.
So what's the lesson here? Well for me it's about trusting both myself, and you, the recipients. I can be honest about building up a business, being in a situation where my income is not yet where I want it to be, and trusting that you won't think less of me for it. I also believe that people love to be part of success. And every one of you is part of my success, present and future. Some will have contributed more than others, but even those of you who may have not actively helped, you have helped me by not unsubscribing to this Museletter! The Museletter has helped me find my 'voice' and many things I write about have found they way into my talks and coaching.
And the other lesson is about asking. Clear communication. We don't know what the other person thinks, so if we want something from them, we must be clear in communicating our situation. I want more business, is there any way you can help me?
