My Muse
On
New
Year’s
Eve
I
was
reading
a
quiz
in
my
newspaper
on
2007
and
they
asked
the
following
question:
Which
of
the
following
“days”
or
“weeks”
will
NOT
take
place
in
2007
– as
far
as
we
know?
*
Answer
below!
a)
Wear
your
Wooly
Hat
to
Work
Week
b)
National
Honey
Week
c)
National
Doodle
Day
d)
National
Lamp-Post
Week
e)
Mad
Hatter
Day
f)
Be
Nice
to
Nettles
Week
This
started
me
thinking
about
the
concept
of
‘National’
days,
weeks
and
years.
I
know
they
are
really
just
a PR
exercise,
and
I do
accept
the
need
for
nettles
to
improve
their
PR,
but
I do
seem
to
have
a
sense
of
humour
failure
sometimes
when
I
think
about
these
trivialities
compared
to
what’s
important.
We
live
in
the
best
of
times
and
the
worst
of
times.
We
have
never
been
freer
to
choose
how
we
live
our
lives,
and
yet
we
seem
to
be
wasting
this
opportunity.
If
religion
was
the
opium
of
the
masses
in
the
18th
century,
in
the
21st
it
seems
to
be a
voyeuristic
interest
in
other
people’s
lives.
The
television
schedules
are
full
of
reality
programmes
where
we
sit
passively
opining
on
what
other
people
are
doing.
Other
people
(me
included)
do
the
same
with
sport.
We
spend
so
much
time
watching
and
reading
about
what
other
people
do.
(Or
in
the
case
of
the
England
teams,
don’t
do!)
And
our
mood
is
affected
by
what
others
do.
We
are
affected
by
the
results
of
other
people’s
endeveours.
This
makes
us
victims,
not
in
the
sense
of
what
is
done
to
us,
but
in
the
sense
that
we
are
not
in
charge
of
our
lives.
And
there
is
only
one
way
to
stop
being
a
victim.
That
is
to
take
charge
of
our
own
life,
to
make
our
decisions,
be
active,
be
proactive,
choose
what
you
want
in
every
area
of
your
life.
This
means
being
more
aware
and
conscious
of
how
you
operate
as
an
individual.
What
are
your
automatic
responses?
Do
these
automatic
responses
support
you?
Do
they
lead
to
your
greater
happiness
or
not?
I
would
like
to
nominate
2007
as
the
Year
of
Conscious
Improvement.
Individuals
would
take
control
of
themselves,
and
choose
which
areas
of
their
live
they
would
improve.
Who
wouldn’t
benefit
by
being
healthier?
Having
more
fun?
Improving
friendships?
I
would
think
that
we
all
would,
but
it
is
unlikely
to
happen
if
we
don’t
grasp
the
nettle(!)
and
make
it
happen.
Choose
to
be
active,
healthy,
with
better
personal
relationships,
and
then
take
action.
And
the
buzz
you
get
as
you
achieve
these
goals
you
can
use
to
create
more
goals,
to
express
more
values
of
yours
and
have
more
pleasure
and
happiness.
Real
pleasure,
not
lazy
pleasure.
I
am
choosing
to
extend
the
reach
of
my
work
this
year.
I
want
more
people
to
be
living
consciously,
increasing
their
happiness
and
feeling
great.
Can
I
ask
for
your
support
here
please?
Who
do
you
know
who
could
benefit
from
this
approach?
Please
either
pass
on
the
Museletter,
or
maybe
recommend
some
coaching
or
attending
a
workshop.
Maybe
it’s
time
for
you
to
invest
in
you?
